Students should have expectations of their school

As educators we have high expectations of our students but what should they expect in return?
I'd love to run a staff workshop on this and compare the list teachers come up with in comparison to the list from the students they teach.

Below is a video on one student's idea of her top 10 expectations, and it's a great place to start but here is a brief summary of her imperatives!

  1. Relationships- am I just a number or do my teachers know me?
  2. Relevance- is what I am learning relevant to me, engaging, of interest and of benefit to me?
  3. Time- can I set my own pace so that I have a broad and deep understanding?
  4. Timing- do I have to learn everything in the same sequence as everyone else?
  5. Play- is there too much pressure to perform or have I got time to make mistakes and learn from them?
  6. Practice- am I given opportunity to practice what I have learnt before moving on to the next unit of work?
  7. Choice- do I have choices? Choices about what I learn, how I learn and when I learn?
  8. Authenticity- is my learning recognised outside of my school?
  9. Challenge- am I going to be appropriately challenged?
  10. Application- will I have the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the real world?
