How to Get Girls to Become Engineers

GoldieBlox, a Toy Company from the U.S. has just released this commercial that advertises its new range of toys developed to “disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers.” When CEO, Debbie Sterling, was studying Engineering at Standford she realised that of all the world's engineers, only 11% are female.
Whilst there has always been Meccano, KNex Lego & Electronic Kits for boys, such as the crystal radio sets that kept my brothers occupied for hours, there was nothing like this designed with girls in mind.
Her idea for the company was to invent toys that would engage girls and spark an inventive streak early. Debbie listed her idea on the Kickstarter website and raised USD $285,881 which was well over their target of $150,000.
These toys are not focused on life skills form last century such as cooking, cleaning and mothering but they introduce more relevant skills such as: creativity, innovation, resilience, spatial awareness, cognition, problem solving, and importantly teaches them not to be afraid to make mistakes and as one little girl on their website says,  "It does not make her a tomboy, it just makes her herself!"
Guess what my nieces will be getting for Christmas! Visit their store: http://www.goldieblox.com/collections/products  or Amazon has some too and they ship to Australia: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_toys-and-games?_encoding=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Goldie%20Blox&node=165793011
