Today is the Australian National Day to say No! to Bullying.

I've just come from a session where I was working with our Year 6's and only one from that whole year level knew what today was....although many excitedly called out "Friday" which was also correct. I admit it's a fairly new initiative but one I think we should be supporting which is why I thought I'd do my bit to share and promote the message.

Firstly there is a brilliant website that offers support and advice to students across all age groups as well as to teachers and parents.

Open up the "Bullying. No Way!" website

It's important for students and parents to recognise that Cyber-Bullying is still bullying. Just because the medium has changed and it happens online now, doesn't change the underlying issues.

One really simple initiative my school introduced a few years ago now was an email address that was bullying@.....edu.au  This means that are girls who are all using 1:1 devices can easily send an email to report a bullying incident. This email is received by the school counsellors office who then take over.

We also use the Melbourne-based group Project Rockit to work with the students in each year level on a range of topics including Bullying, digital citizenship, leadership, positive body-image & effective communication workshops. These cool young hipsters deliver a different perspective on the issues that students can relate to and they admire the presenters and later connect with them via social network sites adding another layer of support access,  whether the students realise it or not.

Lucy at Project Rockit has put together this short video for students on some anti-bullying comebacks.
