I have been reading about the work of Dr. Helen Barrett recently and was thrilled to have the opportunity to hear her speak. As well as being an author she is a recognized international expert on Electronic Portfolios, having researched the topic since 1991 she has made presentations at numerous national and international conferences on this topic, and publishes an internationally-known web site: http://electronicportfolios.org.
In the presentation she talked about the National Education Education Policy that includes a statement around eportfolios and their need to be student managed electronic learning portfolios.........choice and voice. She asked the audience to guess who the first person in history was to collect a portfolio of their work.....when noone replied she flashed up a slide that featured an image of Da Vinci and some of his work, including the Vitruvian man.....it was at this point that the woman next to me jumped up and yelled "Michelangelo"! We discussed the need for different views of the one portfolio as the student progresses through school and also for different audiences. The reason Helen promotes Google education apps over any eportfolio products is because Google offers data liberation i.e. they allow you to transfer the whole lot to a students own personal Google account later on. They also offer the teacher and the school full control and classroom management via the teacher dashboard. FACT: 90% of parents have posted information about their children online....half those posts are ultrasound images.
