Day 6 Closing Keynote

Jeff Piontek, Head of School at the Hawaii Academy of Technology

Global Learners = Global Leaders
And again the same message coming through loud and clear: “Todays students are no longer the people our education system was designed to teach!”
Standardised testing is not a true gauge of a student and yet the test results can mark a child until the following year, or in Australia’s case 3 years!
Think about your passion as an educator?
What are your students passions?
“All children should have a chance to give it a go. The passion has generally gone by about Gr 3 in the U.S which happens to coincide when the testing kicks in and when the teacher accountability kicks in!”
And in Australia?
“there is no longer an excuse not to know how”
“teachers must remember the culture in your room is not the same as your own”
“Teachers guide students with content, and the students will guide the teachers with the technology”
The challenge: “Nourish children’s dreams as those dreams are our future”
